Climate Justice is Gender Justice: Unpacking the impact of climate change on sexual and reproductive health and rights in MENA
Extreme weather events, food insecurity, and energy poverty, as well as depleting water resources, are all contributing to the MENA region’s dire situation and inequality. Climate change impact intertwines with social and political challenges, most notably gender inequality, further limiting the ability of women and girls with intersecting identities to exercise and access Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The side event will present a youth perspective to this challenge. The discussion will be anchored around a compelling research that Oxfam commissioned on the interconnections between Climate Justice, Gender Inequalities, and SRHR in the MENA region, as well as policy recommendations that aim to call for a twin-track approach that prioritizes SRHR in climate action by addressing climate change and structural gender inequalities simultaneously.
